the first part of the song goes, "there's a little cafe on the outside of the border" and that line rhymes with "makes your mouth water"
and I think the chorus goes " lean a little bit closer, I'm all alone...your so big and so strong and the night is still young." it has a nice horn section in the song. the song is about a guy falling in love with a woman at a bar, and then her boyfriend comes and chases the first guy out. I think the word closer is echoed as well

Ah yes that brings back some memories.

Seems like it was about 1964, my junior year in high school when that came out.
We used to go cruising around town with the windows down, radio toking away and when that song came on you could feel your mood lift. Cars would pull up beside each other at a light and kids would be singing that song at each other out the windows. Yeah, those were good times and the music was a big part of it.

The song was, "Come a little bit closer", and the group was Jay and the Americans. They sounded terrific together. They had several other hits in the 60's. I bet if you "Yahoo" or "google" them you will get a whole bunch of info.

They were influenced by several artists from the 50's and in turn they influenced some groups into the 70's.

Pretty awesome to think we're discussing a piece of rock and roll history here.

Come A Little Bit Closer by Jay Black & The Americans. I have this song on a greatest hits cd. It is from the 60's. I was in high scholl when it was popular. Check them out. They have several good songs from that era. One of my very favorites is Cara Mia.

Jay The Americans

COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER
(Boyce / Hart/ Farrell )

In a little café just the other side of the border
She was just sitting there givin' me looks that made my mouth water
So I started walking her way
She belonged to that man, José
And I knew, yes I knew I should leave
When I heard her say, yeah

Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long

So we started to dance
In my arms, she felt so inviting
That I just couldn't resist
Just one little kiss so exciting
Then I heard the guitar player say
"Vamoose, José's on his way"
Then I knew, yes I knew I should run
But then I heard her say, yeah

Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long

------ instrumental break ------

Then the music stopped
When I looked the café was empty
Then I heard José say
"Man you know you're in trouble plenty"
So I dropped my drink from my hand
And through the window I ran
And as I rode away
I could hear her say to José, yeah

Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long

La la-la-la la-la
La la-la-la la-la
Ho ho la-la
La la la-la

Johnny Duncan and Janie Fricke also remade this song in the mid to late 70's.
