I keep hearing that marriage is on the downward spiral, but kids just seem to keep popping out. So many people either don't get married or wait until they're practically middle aged. Are people just shacking up or something?

Marriage is to procreate and legitimize the children in the union. There is no difference in the pain of a divorce or the pain of a common law separation, except the protection the marriage gives to both the woman and the children. The man feels the pain financially in a divorce, but not separation where he gets off Scot free.
Shacking up is good for the man because he gets to play house, milk the cow, and pay no long term debt or commitment. The woman always looses out in the end. If there are bastard children involved, they become the biggest losers in the relationship because they have little or no claim on their biological father's estate. Single mom's have a very rough time.

I was married once and will never do it again.
I will live with a man for a zillion years before I get married.
But I don't want any more kids. One is enough for me.

getting married poses more risks than just living together (even with kids involved) example: whats worse to a 10 year olds ears "sweety me and daddy are getting divorced" or "sweety me and daddy are going to start living in different houses", getting married can lead to divorce causing $$$ problems (court costs) where just breaking up is less... messy

I did the right thing and got married before living my with my husband and, it didn't work out. You don't really know someone until you live with them.

Now I'm divorced and been living with my current man for almost 9 years. If we get married, that would be nice. If not, what does it matter.
