This is a writ issued by a court as part of an equitable relief. For example, suppose that John Doe has agreed to sell you a parcel of land, but before delivering title changes his mind. Your relief from the court is a writ for specific performance, ordering him to sell you the land.

A contract is basically an agreement that each party will do certain things, or refrain from doing certain things.
Specific performance is remedy that can be requested, when someone else has refused to abide by the contract terms. It allows the court to order both parties to perform according to the terms of the contract.
The first post gives a good example, in a land-sales contract setting. But the remedy can be requested in any contract setting where the contract can be performed by both parties, and where such specific performance is the best way to resolve the dispute.

I suggest you add "Yahoo Discussions" into this website to sartisy those with that thrill. sometimes we wanna share opinions which also quesiotns and answers, however, we wanna put several messages as arguement. of course, right now, this is hard for the asker, cuz the asker cannot put more than the limits. and there is something strange too. when I add details, the character limits should be 1000, but when I reach less than 10 like 5 or 4, it tells me "oops, you exceeded the limit"!!! thank you so much for this nice service!
