Many of my students confuse a summary with a retelling. A summary is retelling the MAIN ideas of a story or article, in your own words, using as few words as possible. What makes or breaks a summary is the topic sentence. I've taught my students using the step up to writing strategy of I V FT

1. Identify

2. Verb

3. Finish the Thought

Identify: You identify the story title and author.

The book Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan,

Verb: Use a good strong summarizing verb, eg. explains, recounts, compares, justifies, analyzes, shows, tells, determines, etc.

The book Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, recounts

Finish the Thought: complete the sentence.

The book Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan recounts the story of a young, wealthy, Mexican girl, who must relocate to the United States in order to rebuild her life from the tragedies experienced by the death of her beloved father.

Now you have a good solid direction for your writing and the topic sentence will help you stay on course with your summary.

Good Luck!

To tell the truth I'm the worst one to try and help you because I love to talk and I never summarize...I go on and on and on ...but seriously....if I had to write a summary it would be a short explanation about a story I read....or something I saw....like a movie without telling the whole thing......you shorten the message the (summary) you give the person who reads it a taste of what you read or saw....so they will want to read the book or see the movie. Like when you have a bite of food you do not eat the whole bowl you just take a small amount to get an idea what the soup is going to taste like....best wishes I hope I helped you some....Hugs from Mama Jazzy Geri

A summary is just a brief paragraph that tells what the article is about.
If the article is properly written, the lead sentence should give you the topic. Then you can skim through the article and pick a few points of reference, giving examples of that topic, and sum it up by drawing a conclusion about whether it is an accurate account, or an interesting account, or whatever your personal reaction to it was.

Start with the basics - who, what, when, where, why, and how something happened.
