No, a person will not die from holding their own breath. You would never be able to hold it till you pass out.
Breathing is not a voluntary task. You don't have to think to do it. Your body does it on its own. The reason it is involuntary, your brain needs the oxygen from breathing, therefore, your brain forces us to breath.
This is one of the reasons you start coughing. The brain starts the coughing to get the oxygen it needs ASAP.

No, because after holding the breath for a long enough time, the person will pass out, leading to breathing again.

I really don't think a person can kill them selves by holding their breath I beleive it is impossible. The body would take over and pass out at the lack of O2 and right away start breathing again. You probably will only cause a major head ache.

No. The body has a built in safety mechanism called "passing out." When you pass out, your conscious brain obviously kicks off and your lung functions convert back to involuntary function. Breathing is one of a very few body functions that can be voluntary or involuntary. I believe blinking is another.

If by voluntary you mean holding your breath, the answer is NO, because you'd lose consciousness, and start breathing again.

You would probably pass out from holding your breath for too long, at which time you would start breathing again normally (somewhat)

No, you can hold your breath until you pass out, but breathing is an involuntary act. Your body will begin breathing on its own once you are out. No worries on that!

If you do this in a safe environment with no hazards and don't stick your head in a sack or use a scarf to shut off your breathing, you'll be ok. Once you pass out, breathing will resume.

No. You will either pass out and then keep breathing or your mind/body won't let you and makes you take a breath. I wouldn't try it tho. It's not good for your brain or your lungs.
