This is almost a rhetorical question... Computers (specifically since that is what you posed versus other technologies) have had a tremendous impact on life as we know it. They have fostered globalization at a blistering pace; one that would not have been possible if not for the speed and automation provided by computer technology. This globalization is not only economic but cultural as well. The advent of the computer on global and local markets is apparent but the cultural effects are based more on rapid communication and information exchange. Beyond a basic computer model the most important element is the ability to network electronically. This is the enabler that creates the synergy between machine and society giving all near-instant global reach and influence.
EDIT: There is much irony in those who exhort the sadness in computer technology while responding via a computer...

Unfortunately I think it's mostly sad. People seem to be spending more time relating to technology than they do to each other. We have more ways to communicate potentially but we have more angry children and just as many divorces as before, if not more. There was a study a few months ago which stated that fewer and fewer people feel like they have even one friend they could call in the middle of the night in case of an emergency. I think that's very sad... the number has been steadily going down since around 1985.
