When I was 18, in North Carolina, you had to be 18 to drink beer and wine, 21 to drink liquor.

When I was 20, they raised the beer age to 19.

When I was 22, they made them all 21. So I stayed one jump ahead of them.

This was in response to a Reagan-era policy of cutting Federal highway money to any state that didn't have a drinking age of 21, all to satisfy drunk-driving activists who conveniently ignored the fact that 95% of the drunks who got in car accidents even then were over 21, and 4% of the other 5% were under the legal drinking age anyway. Only a very small percentage of drunk driving accidents were caused by the effected segment of the population.

I think we should set an age of 'adulthood' and make everything happen at that age. And I think that age should be 19. That keeps it out of the high schools. That would be the legal age for drinking, joining the military, marrying without parental consent, signing a contract, etc.

Drinking alcohol is a HUGE responsibilty. Beyond the ramifications that come with drinking and driving there is the maturity issue. As a bouncer in a bar that is frequented by MANY persons betweeen 21 and 25 I tend to disagree and say that it's fine at 21. Most of those guys cant's handle it anyways. But at the same time I was 18 once and remember the fact that I could be called upon to die for my country but I would be damned if I could get a beer.

I think 18 is an ok age to drink actually. Just remember though that people like me will not put up with your immature BS. You have to be responsible for you actions. You and only you!

I suppose you mean the legal drinking age. That doesn't really matter since the average person begins drinking by age 14 and is usually dependent by age 17. I suppose people could drink legally if they could prove they are mature enough to handle the privilege. When the drinking age was 18 there were more alcohol related deaths. Not to mention the fact that fewer people willingly enlist in the military now than ever before and drafting is not current. However, if you join the troops and get stationed in Germany you could probably enjoy drinking legally. I loved drinking as a minor but now that I am 24, drinking has not been so appealing for the last 3 years.

Wah..wah..wah. Did someone just turn 18? What does the year have to do with it? People are the same as always and kids still can't handle liquor. I'd give you real explanation about military service bringing out the best in people and alcohol the worst being the major difference but I suspect it would fall on deaf ears. So I'll just repeat what many have said before - I'm for allowing the 18 years old that join the military to drink. The rest of you can wait until you're 21.

Personally, I think that -either- the legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 -or- the minimum age for both voting and enlisting in the military should be raised to 21.

It doesn't make sense to me that the US trusts its young citizens to help choose a President and use weapons to kill people, but not to have a dang beer.

Maybe make the age for all of these things an even 20?? Yeah, that sounds good to me...

Well, kids have proven that they can't control their drinking....even 21 year olds don't. That's a good point about being sent to war, but not being able to drink....that's why the voting age was lowered to 18; but they want to give give people a few more years to mature I guess. I really don't know the reasons for it being 21. I think MADD had something to do with that, though it seems like.

like all other countries in the world, 18 is about right, any older is foolish because the 18 year old get them anyways....any more younger, well you cannot intoxicate youself before 17 because alot part of your organs are being developed especially your brain. If we smoke, drink alcohol do drugs below 17, there is more like our organs would stop to grow.

18 is the age to drink.....

I think 25 because by then you should be more responsible by then. But also by then you would have gotten the alcohol illegal so many times that you might not want to drink anymore. Your auto insurance goes down at the age of 25 too.

I agree mainly because since they can fight and die for their country at that age and are able to drive, vote, play the lottery, and smoke. If they go off to college, they're likely to attend parties that have alcoholic beverages and some even start in high school.

18, no question in my mind, and I don't drink at all any longer, but right is right. If drinking is legal for some, then certainly the age of military service should be the indicator.
