The sudden death of Anna Nicole Smith's son in the Bahamas, already puzzling, became more mysterious today when a coroner ruled the death "suspicious" and scheduled a formal inquiry.

Daniel Wayne Smith, who was 20, was the only son of Smith, a former Playboy playmate known in America as a reality television star and Supreme Court plaintiff. He died on Sunday in his mother's hospital room, three days after she gave birth to a daughter.

Today the chief inspector of the Bahamas coroner’s office confirmed that his death had been ruled suspicious. "Whenever there is a suspicious death, we would have an inquest to determine how the person died," said Bradley Neely.

An inquest has been scheduled to begin on October 23, when a jury will hear evidence about Smith's death and could recommend that the case be sent to the attorney-general’s office for a criminal investigation.

Press reports have said that Smith had no visible injuries and Reginald Ferguson, the assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamian Police Force, has told journalists that no illegal drugs were found on his body or in the hospital room, where his mother has said she woke up to find him, unresponsive, in a chair.

Earlier today, Bahamas's coroner Linda P. Virgill did little to quell speculation by saying that she knew the cause of Smith's death and alleging that a third person was in the room when he died.

"We do know the cause of death but we need to confirm it with a toxicology report," she told the Associated Press before adding:

"I can confirm that there was definitely a third person in the room at the time of death and I do know who that person is.

"But I am unwilling to reveal that information at this time for various reasons."

Daniel Smith was the son of Anna Nicole and Bill Smith, who married in 1985 and divorced two years later.

The son had small roles in her movies Skyscraper and To the Limit. He was known to American viewers for his many appearances in the E! reality television series The Anna Nicole Show", that gave his mother a new lease of celebrity life.

Anna Nicole Smith became notorious for her marriage to J. Howard Marshall II, an 89-year-old Texan oil tycoon, in 1994, when she was 26. His death the following year led to a vicious, and as yet unresolved, court battle over his estate between her and the rest of his family.

After winning an initial court judgement that entitled her to $474 million, Smith, who is now 38, saw her inheritance cut to $89 million and then nothing, before the US Supreme Court ruled in May that she could continue to pursue her claim in the Californian courts.


I was devestated when i heard about Steve Irwin too, i was actually planning on going to Australia Zoo (His Animal park) the day he died but when i heard what had happened, i was just to shocked to bring myslef to it. Here i was (And so many others) thinking he was invincible, i gues life has it's harsh days too...

An autopsy was performed Monday. On Tuesday, Her Majesty's Coroner Linda P. Virgill said that based on preliminary findings, "the cause of death is not natural." But, she said, "we wish to reserve [announcing] the cause of death at this time," adding that a toxicology results and a full autopsy report will be released by the end of the week.


Virgill said an inquest will take place afterward and her staff will interview all "relevant witnesses," including Anna Nicole Smith, hospital workers and flight attendants, to develop an official timeline.


The coroner's statements came in the wake of a story in the Nassau Guardian that Daniel Smith suffered a "massive heart attack" and that antidepressants had been found in his system. The newspaper said that Daniel was seen "vomiting uncontrollably" shortly before his death.

Her son died in the same hospital room while visiting with her, he was not a patient there. I suspect he had a little hepl with an overdose of something. Don't mean to sound so unsympathetic but look at his mother,at least she is consistant with the way all of the men in her life leave her

From what I understood, he was visiting her in the hospital, as she had just delivered her baby a few days prior, and he collapsed dead from a heart attack. Not sure if that's what really happened, just what I heard.
