Cheap Trick!! I do own Greatest Hits (1991) and Lap Of Luxury (1988 vinyl), certainly an influence for Smashing Pumpkins

That's true about Velvet U. but they were comanded by Reed who was not as charismatic as (example)David Byrne...

we're looking for a band who have pleased both critics and fans...and someone who do not dive into the crowd to beat'em up...

Van Halen! yes, but I'd say with Haggard in vocals: he also play guitar! No just jump around...filthy voice, yet powerful, but not as melodic as yer man DLR

Velvet Underground - Introduced the world to avant garde rock. They were the first band to make such a wide usage of distortion and feedback, that has been copied ever since, and they heavily influenced bands from Joy Division to Teenage Jesus & The Jerks. (Probably only just fits into this time frame, but meh)

Sonic Youth - The biggest no-wave punk band of all time. They introduced the world to their bizarre tunings, and chaotic method of playing guitars with screwdrivers & drum sticks, and brought back the experimentation to punk music. They influenced, discovered, and insisted their record label sign Nirvana as well.

Dead Kennedys - They broke the mould that a punk tune could only go a 2 minutes 30, by punching out long jams like Holiday In Cambodia.

Nirvana - Took being a p-ssed off teenager to the masses, even though they resisted. Gave teenagers the world over an anthem.

Superchunk --

Because they have been doing the whiney pop-punk thing since 1989, a decade before the genre became mainstream and went on mtv. A genre which still dominates modern rock radio today. So, from a certain point of view, they are the most important, atleast in terms of influence. The evolution of a punk style they pioneered is still going strong today with no end in sight, over 15 years after their debut, in terms of rock radio play...

Heres an extremely abridged overview of Superchunk's influence on whiney pop-punk (emo):

1990 superchunk --> 1997 the get up kids --> 1999 jimmy eat world/blink--> 2006 fallout hawthorne panic... whatever the hell kids are listening to these days...

Yup. Punk combined with hearfelt whining. Superchunk did it first. And kids today are still doing it. The style of music will definintely not appeal to everyone and they don't have prolific album sales or airplay, but their influence is undeniable, which makes them my choice over some more obvious acts.

I think Red Hot Chili Peppers have a shout. If you think about the amount of bands that used them as inspiration. Nirvana, Green Day, Foo Fighters to name but a few. The Chilis were there at the birth of American punk.

O.k the songwriting leaves a little to be desired, but their live shows and appeal across the globe is staggering. Even now after 20 years they can fill stadiums.

the most important AMERICAN band since 1976..I would have to say...
Cheap Trick
not only because of thier pop commercial succes but also thier non mainstream music is fantastic...
Also believe it or not they are one of the most influentual bands on musicians of the 90s and today.
when slash formed velvet revolver and was auditioning singers he made them sing all cheap trick songs...
billy corgan and the smashing pumpkins were very influenced by thier music an so wasnt stone temple pilots.
Live they are one of the tightest professional bands around and fun to watch....
they've had a large amount of success and are still going strong...

It sounds good, despite if that's teadious and can be tiring. i'm advantageous it has its good factors yet plenty is going right into a excursion. Even for small bands. in case you're questioning approximately it, decide for it. you would be able to under no circumstances get a 2d danger.
