dear lavanya, to be frank its tough to know if a person is trustworthy at any point of time. you have to know and understand him/her well. there a few who will be honest from square one and some would take their own sweet time to open up.
all you have to do is be friendly, caring and understanding with whomever you want to know is trustworthy. make the person feel comfortable.
most important is the time when your having an interaction with the person.

You have to figure that out over time....you can't just look at a person and say they are trustworthy....its a relationship that has to build

trust them
but with big things [things you would not like to lose] get a legal contract
if they get angry at your desire for legal contract, drop them
if they are really on your side, they will understand that no one can be sure of anyone, and that you will want the reassuring comfort of a written contract
also a written contract saves argument about what exactly is promised - in a verbal agreement, you may be agreeing about different things

hmm .. talk to them .. the more you talk (approximately more than a month or about a month well the longer the better) and notice his/her behaviors/behaviours and what they talk about and how they behave/act upon everything they talk about .. if a person shares everything with you like if he/she tells u whatz goin on in his/her life & what he/she has done, that's a good sign .. I'm not exactly 100% sure if I'm right or not coz I myself am in the same situataion but I went for my guts.
Always follow ur heart .. listen closely to ur heart n u'll figure it out.
