A great question with no simple answers.

It's definitely wrong when the assault weapon ends up in the wrong hands - drug dealers, gangs, criminals, etc.

But, on the other hand, it is of no concern in the hands of a law abiding citizen who simply "wants" one.

From a law enforcement perspective, when the assault weapons are legal, they invariably fall into the wrong hands. When they are illegal, it definitely limits their availability and makes enforcement in getting them off the streets much easier.

Self protection is a rather lame argument for owning an assault weapon - a 357 revolver or 9mm semi automatic or even an old 12 Gu shot gun will do just fine. There's really no valid reason or need for a 20 round clip or a fully automatic weapon.

There's a certain fascination gun collectors seem to have with an AK-47 or AR-15 / M-16 type weapon, but I don't think this over rides the public safety and police safety issues when they get into the possession of criminals.

When our forefathers penned in the Right To Bear Arms, they had no idea of the type of "arms" that are available today. That, too, is a lame argument for owning an assault weapon.

Tough question - public safety vs. an individual's rights. The gun control nuts in one corner and the NHRA in the other corner.
The best solutions are usually somewhere in the middle.

Not wrong to want one or own one. However a shotgun is the best for home defense and they are cheap. AK-47's and the like have very high powered rounds that can easily go through walls, wood, metal, etc which could endanger your family and or others around you.

The best defense if there is an attack is going to be having a plan to get your family to safety a WEEK or 2 worth of food and water, a way to make fire, candles, etc. Think items you would need to survive in the old west with no power.

Not a bad idea to have a pistol and/or a shotgun but realistcally you wont ever be fighting any Taliban on American soil.

Whatever weapons you decide to go with make sure you get training. Your local gun store can point you to who offers tactical training.

I don't think so. I own a Mossberg 12 gauge pump cut down to 20 inches, an F.I. Garcia cal 380 and I'm looking at a Colt M1911 or a 5 inch cal 357. I also own a small crossbow and a Savage 275 compound with at least 45 hunting arrows for each. Assault rifles aren't my cup of tea.

Is it wrong to want one? I'd say no.

Is it wrong to have one? Well, depending on where you live, your legal status, and its condition, 'right' and 'legal' might not exactly end up the same.

As far as I'm concerned, though, if you're going to have a functional one you ought to have the training to use it. It's blurry, for sure. Check your local laws first, then state, and then national regarding your situation.

If you have one without telling anyone, and you've not got a certain status (such as law enforcement official) then it's not going to be legal.

Assault Rifles?

1 - Are Good.

2 - Are Affordable.

3 - Are generally very good self-defense weapons - remember the old adage: the only purpose of a pistol is to fight the way to your rifle!

Never be in doubt that YOU are responsible for the safety of yourself and your family; no one else can do this for you - not the police (God luv 'em!), not your neighbors, not your friends, it is up to YOU to be responsible for your own safety and those whom you love.

God Bless and Good Luck.

.. the most likely threat to your liberty will be officers in FEMA uniforms and UN troops "restoring order" in a martial law crackdown ... they will be doing coordinated sectioning off of cities and neiborhoods confiscating weapons ... food will most likely be cut off, so will electric and fuel , and roads will be cut off with roadblocks of troops ... so while ur sitting there with ur rifle in hand contemplating wtf happened and the troops are going house to house confiscating weapons ask urself .... are you ready to stand up for your rights and country? will you drop the hammer on a UN troop squad in your neiborhood? forget about the uncircumsized heathens landing on the shore to invade that will never happen ... it will be an internal thing... so are you ready to die for your way of life or not?
