I've always been limited as to what I've been able to accomplish due to the fact that I tend to try too hard, especially when the pressure's on. How do I overcome this self defeating pattern?

What do some of you more successful people do to avoid this pitfall?

You are already half the way to overcoming this pattern because it requires great insight to acknowledge this, and even more so that you can articulate what is hindering you.

I think you can overcome this tendency and finish the second half of the process.

Take some notes for yourself, and carefully think it through:

1) Identify when you feel pressure
2) Describe the feeling in your own words. Visualize and recall what it is like when you are experiencing these feelings.
3) Recognize what particular events or tasks are especially stressful and provoke this tendency to try too hard.
4) Take small steps to change the behavior; don't try to fix this all at once.
5) Discover an event when you try too hard, and decide consciously how you will respond the next time it happens.
6) Give yourself permission to make mistakes.
7) Practice stress-relieving techniques and breathing exercises to first avoid feeling pressure.... and...
8) Eventually you will learn through time and experience that you can feel less pressure, loosen up a bit, and overcome the pattern.

It takes practice!

Simple... rid off the high standard that you keep imposing on yourself. You rather put the pressure on yourself than the work or time does on you. You try too hard to accomplish something that you assume will awe yourself or audiences (such as the people close to you, the people you work with)... but that's not very good. Why not finish the job as simple as it should be -- finish it ahead of schedule -- then make improvements as you please while you still have extra time?

Do you live near a climable mountain or peak? We have many in Hawaii.
Go with some friends up the mountain, but stop before you get to the top.
Knowing that you aren't going to make it to the top...slow down and take a good look around you.
Don't consider yourself a failure if you decide to do it anyway...as long as you appreciate the company that you keep, and the day about you.

simple, be yourself... give it your best shot, sure... but in a manner of cautiousness. never allow distraction to rule you, just do what you can. any accomplishment, failure of successful, is still a success... how is it possible to be one? you atempted it and made your best, that is already an accomplishment in itself. indulging in success however is another aspect, of course. how do many successful person achive this? A B C.... ABILITY, BREAKS, and COURAGE... these are the keys. however, breaks can stand alone in itself, luck is a main ingredient in it.... you may have the ability and courage, but not the break, you may not be successful. you may have the courage and the breaks, not the ability, you'd be successful. you have the ability and the breaks, not the courage, you'd be successful... as long as you have the breaks, you have the success... just observe the luck and be thankful you tried out, you gain the knowledge and the wisdom of humility....

Did you try to do it in leisurely manner?Leisurely means you are enjoying while doing your work. enjoying means you are interested to do it, not worried about time. Try to find out what will happen.
