I'm going to use the G.I. bill, and so there has to be a college. I don't want to start at a big university. I don't want a big city because I hate the traffic and the people seem to be less friendly. I'm a country boy, and I'm looking for the same kind of people to hang out with. I have three months left in New York before I have to decide. I also love country music, and I would prefer a few country bars in the town as well. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Texas State University at San Marcos.

Close to Austin, not too big, and also close to San Antonio. Austin is a great Country Music town and San Marcos probably has a pretty fair number of venues as well.

TSTU is largely a teachers' college and has lots of girls. That's a plus.

Check it out. It's also the alma mater of Lyndon Johnson.

I'd say Lubbock - I spent six years there and it has all you're looking for including a good connection east and west. But if you're a real east coast person then perhaps Austin - you'll have the greenery you're used to. West Texas has nothing but dusty grassy and tumble weed filled plains that are hot in summer and freezing in winter. Head to Austin - Dallas and Houston are a stone's throw away (by Texas standards) - you'll be close to Fort Hood too. And the music scene is the best. Good luck and remember that Texas is like a whole other country.

Austin, TX It's not the big city some think it is. We have the University and community colleges, we also are big on music of all kinds and country living is not a problem either. People are friendly here also. I moved here from Southern California and I love it here.

Hmmm...

San Marcos, pop. 50,000, Texas State Univ.
San Angelo, pop. 110,000, Angelo State Univ.
Abiline, pop. 110,000, Abilene Christian Univ.
Waco, pop. 100,000, Baylor Univ.
Tyler, pop. 90,000, Univ. of Texas-Tyler
Huntsville, pop. 75,000, Sam Houston State Univ.

There are so many options, I can't list them all. Lubbock is a relatively small city of 200,000, but Texas Tech Univ. has about 30,000 students. Notice I kept you one hour or more away from Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. Good luck!

Amarillo has Amarillo college and West Texas A&M is just 15 minutes away. Also, with Lubbock just down the road you can finish there.
And if you do come to our neck of the woods, Welcome!
