Yes. I've had a job like this for two years about 4 years ago. I did it while I was in college (I figured, hey, why not play video games for a living.)

Anyway, what I did was I signed up as a beta tester for certain copanies (Squaresoft / Square-Enix, Microsoft.. etc.)

Well, at first this seems like a cool, fun idea. After a while, it got really old. I remember I was one of the first few people to play final fantasy 10 for the first time. They mailed a beta version to me, and I had to keep track of every bug, every problem, every sequence, etc. It got really tedious.

When you test video games, you don't play them for enjoyment - instead, you play them for a break down. You need to run into every wall to make sure you don't go flying through it. You need to test items, you need to test graphics, you need to keep talking to characters, driving cars, testing the limits, ect. ect. It's not nearly as fun as I thought it would have been when I as a highschool kid. It actually WAS work, haha.

You do a lot of typing, and a lot of writing sending the reports back, etc.

The pay is pretty decent, but it IS work.

Yup there is! I even know of people who have them....but alas, i've never been offered this job before, bummer. It's gotta be a hard one to get considering how many people would rather do that.

I have heard from peole who have the job that they just get sent a system with a small part of a game on it to run tests on and such, so they don't actually get to play the whole game-and they have to send the system back when done.

Yes but not how you think..

There are places that higher you to Play their games.
But you have deadlines to beat so many levels or get so far. You have to write paperwork on the gameplay, report any bugs or glitches and sometimes actully write a little unoffical walkthrough for it. The only people who really get to sit down and just play the game. Are the designers, they test the game much like a tester, but its quicker for them to do it so they can see first hand just what is working and not working..

You can easily becoma a beta tester for RealArcade. You are still subject to the 60 minute limit but you get to play the game before it is released ;) if you have RealArcade look on the right side on the program window & click the link to become a beta tester. Hope this helps,

Send an email to betagames@real.com to indicate your interest in beta testing for RealArcade games.

yes! i think most people that test video games are also the people that write the code for the game or in other words language. i have only heard of a few colleges that offer training, those r the ones that u see on tv all the time

Yes, I know I guy who got a job testing for EA games in Orlando - it's not as swell as it seems, he spends most of his day runing into walls, and doing paperwork. The designers seem to get to "play" the games.
