My daughter will be staying at a friend's house for 2 nights while my husband and I go out of town. What would be an appropriate gift to give to the family that my daughter stays with? We aren't very close friends, (we don't hate them or anything), but our daughters are very close. Their family consists of husband, wife, a ten year old daughter and my daughter's best friend who is 13 years old. Anyone have any ideas?

I would give a Muffin Basket, or a fruit basket.

It is important not to go overboard on this one, and yet at the same express your appreciation and set a good example for your children.
I agree that a fruit basket would work with a thank you card. Any other type of food is risky with amount of food allergies and cultural/ religious limitations that conflict with other foods. It is simple and not over the top and doesn't lead to recpricated expectations.
I do not think wine is appropriate - not only does it give the connotation that you drink and the assumption they drink, and the presumption they are not alcoholics, there are many other cultural and social constraints on alcohol as a gift.

Maybe gift certificates for movie rental and pizza - it would be something the whole family could enjoy and the parents wouldn't have to worry about getting a babysitter.

On the other hand, after spending that much time with all those kids it might also be nice to give the parent's a night out without any kids, so maybe a gift certificate to a nice restaurant.

Those are my suggestions.

Try a little basket filled with snacks, games, maybe a DVD or something. Even a plate of cookies will do. You're not that great of friends with the family so there's no reason to go overboard, just a small gesture to show that you appreciate their taking your daughter for the weekend.

Give a fruit basket...or some kind of basket with food in it. B/c not only is that a nice gesture, but your daughter can eat out of it too. Therefore, it will save them $$$.

Don't forget a thank you card attached saying how thankful you are!

You could bring the family a present from the place you and your husband will be visiting while you are out of town.

present enjoying cards are great presents. I have been given some as quickly as I have been given married and that i became merely as happy as though I had won an quite latest. Plus, that is alot much less demanding to get a latest card for somebody you do not understand ok.
