norman777 gave good advice, but also unscrew things like light switches and door handles so they are loose and u dont paint over them, its usually easier than spending hours masking up.
Also u MUST prepare the walls properly, here in aus we use something called sugarsoap its a really strong cleaner, u must wash ur walls properly before u start painting otherwise ur just painting over dirt and the paint will come off. If ur planning on painting the skirting boards, door frames with gloss, rub them back with fine sandpaper first, then tack rag them to pick up any bits, then u can paint
It sounds fiddly, but painting is easy, its the preparation that must be done properly if u want to do a good job. Also invest in good brushes, nothing worse than spending half ur time picking bristles off ur freshly painted walls

Go to Home Depot and pick your colors. I prefer Behr. The type I like is eggshell. It cost alittle more. Buy rollers, brushes, blue painters tape, plastic drop clothes, and a paint tray. I recently painted my room 5 different greens. It came out nice. My Mom had just bought a new house and had a professional painter paint her whole house. They finished in a day, so I had them come out and paint the rest of my house. I only had to buy the paint and pay for labor. It was nice to come home to a finished painted house. If you have the money hire someone.

I think painting is fun. Make sure that you have several rolls of that BLUE painters tape as it is best for marking off areas where you do not want to paint..i.e. floor boards.... ceiling lines, etc.
Make sure that there is cloth or plastic or paper, etc on the floor so that the paint is not splattered onto the floor.. I use a roller.. I thnk that is best.. I use a brush to get the corners and down near the floor boards.
I love using a water base paint, of course... but a satin finish on the walls... I also paint my ceilings.. the same color as the walls but in a flat finish
Good luck.. you should have fun

You need to know the phone number of an exprienced painter. Practicing on your own home is not a good idea. You will be looking at your mistakes until you get sick of it and have to get someone in to re-do it!
