Is it a nice place to live and raise children? What about diversity? and jobs? schools? Any info is appreciated.

Maine generally isn't very diverse though there has been Somali immigration.
It's a nice sized city, that's easy to get around. There are museums, the waterfront, nearby islands, beaches, lots of outdoor activities. Maine is very civilized (people put their carts into the cart storage at the supermarket/they apologize if they bump you in the aisle).

I live about 20 minutes away from portland.
It's a fantastic city...an excellent city for kids...low crime rate.
a small city with alot of ethnic diversity.
my friends have kids in thier school system and they have no complaints.
I believe the major employer in portland is southern maine med. which is a fantastic hospital.
but there is a diversity of jobs in the area.
lots of thing to do...
portland sea dogs..the boston red sox minor league team..plays here.
the portland pirates the anahiem mighty ducks minor league hockey team plays here.
the music scene is really good with concerts at the civic center and all ages rock n roll shows at the state theater.
the maine mall in south portland is the biggest mall in maine
the old port is beautiful with old fashioned cobblestone streets.
old orchard beach is 20 min. away and so are a bunch of other beaches.
I've lived in a few states and I've lived in this area for 6yrs now and I don't intend on leaving anytime soon...
a very nice place to live and Mainers are wonderful people.
I hope I helped..I may sound a little biased but it really is a nice place.
