Like many of the other Nevada brothels located in isolated, rural locations, the Cottontail's management has often faced problems in the recruitment and retention of ladies. As a result, in the early 2000s its former owners had to temporarily close this brothel on several occassions due to a lack of courtesans. After being purchased by Moe Greene in late 2003 (who in early 2004 also bought Mona's Ranch in Elko), and with the debut of their new website (in mid-December 2003), it was hoped the Cottontail would finally have a steady core of working ladies and be open for business on a more permanent basis. However, by the Spring of 2005 the Cottontail had once again fallen upon hard times, and it is currently closed. Mr. Greene is apparently no longer involved in the ownership, and this brothel is up for sale at an asking proce of $1 million (see the website listed above - which also contains some interesting historical data about the Cottontail).
I'm not including the link because of sexually explicit content!!
I checked and it the cottontail website - it really is up for sale for a million dollars.

The World Famous Cottontail Ranch, established in 1967 received one of the first brothels licenses ever issued in Nevada. The Cottontail first met with notoriety when it's infamous Madam Beverly Harrell ran for a Nevada State Assembly. A media and politically savvy woman, Harrell found herself and the Cottontail Ranch the center of worldwide media attention. Although a guest on such shows as Donahue, NBC's Today Show, and even The Tonight Show, the controversy that followed Harrell and her role as a Madam still lost her the election by eleven votes.
Today's Cottontail Ranch continues to be a center of excitement. It's full bar and warm hospitality create a relaxing atmosphere for both the courtesans that work here and the cliental that visit. From vast number of celebrities, to the average Joe, everyone walks away from a Cottontail experience with a broad smile on their face, and a warm feeling in their hearts. Complete with VIP rooms and an incredible Jacuzzi room, the Cottontail Ranch lives by the motto of:
"Making your fantasies a reality for over 35 years!"
With it's own FAA approved airstrip and conveniently located just 165 miles from Las Vegas, a trip to the Cottontail Ranch by car or plane is easy and a must for any gentleman, couple or even ladies seeking a goodtime.
A frequent home and weekend stay to Howard Hughes, The Cottontail plays a central role in the story of Mr. Hughes being picked up from by a gentleman on Route 95 in front of the Cottontail Ranch and being driven to Las Vegas... the man who picked him up was allegedly promised a fortune in the Hughes Will. Recent news stories on the subject have put the Cottontail Ranch back into the lime light!!

Fair or not, that's the terms agreed upon by both the owner and the "ladies". It's the same with any job. If you don't like the situation, you move on and find something you do like. In general, prostitution is not a big money-making proposition. Working for someone else seldom is. Very few prostitutes are freelance, simply because they don't have sufficient contacts to make it on their own. There is usually someone behind the scene who is providing them with clients. By taking 50%, the brothel owner is ensuring that the "ladies" remain indebted for a longer period of time.

As the owner, he can legally set the amount of his commission to whatever he wishes. If they do not wish to work for this rate, then they are free to quit. Considering that he pays for the facility, health testing (extremely expensive at the rate of $200-500+ for a single test for one STD), security, health care, insurance, etc, I'd say that he is being fair.

High price of diesel fuel for truckers, bad economic times 10 years ago all contributed to lack of customers that were willing to pay a decent price for some knarl.
