for 3 days now our bathroom stinks! i cleaned, bleached, scrubbed everything but the smell is still there and i think it's getting even stronger. sometimes it smells like a sewer; other times, it smells like a dead animal. i can't tell for sure..also, to tell you the truth, i have no clue what a decomposing animal is supposed to smell like! i have literally put my nose to everything in that bathroom (toilet, bidet, shower, bathtub, all the drains, floor, walls, air vent, etc) and i can't find the source. what could it be?! if it's a dead animal in the walls, what can i do about it? how long will the smell last IF it is an animal? help me, pls!

wow...so many quick responses. thanks guys! as i mentioned earlier, i did stick my nose in every drain to see if the smell was coming from there. i didn't smell anything. if it was a problem originating from there, i'd smell something, right? i am thinking more and more that it's a dead animal. i'd better ask the guy downstairs if his cat's ok. haha...
so if it's a rat/mouse it will take around 2 weeks to get rid of the smell? god, i hope i can last that long! thanks again for all your responses.

A sewer smell is definitely from escaping sewer gas. You should have a plumber check the traps to make sure they are working properly. Also, do you know when the sewer tank was last emptied? Sometimes smells can come in from outside if the sewer tank is full and overloading the leach field. Sometimes if a cap comes off one of the sewer pipes in your yard the sewer gases will escape and cause a sewer smell. Make sure your indoor pipes and traps are cleaned of buildup.

If you've ever smelled rotten meat in your refrigerator, you know what a rotting animal smells like. It's possible it is a mouse or rat in the wall, but check possible plumbing problems to rule that out.

if it is a dead animal in the wall it is probably a mouse or rat and it could take up to 2 weeks to get the smell out try buring a candel in there to help minimize the smell also if you have cleaned everything then try this close the drain to your sink and tub it could be back up from your sewer not likely but it could be i would say it is a dead mouse and plan on about 2 weeks for it to totally decompose good luck and burn a candel in that room when ever you are home it will help a lot good luck

The bathrooms on your place have a pipe that runs as much as the roof that permit sewer odors out - the plumbing vent - if that pipe is blocked, the odors will come again into the abode. check out the roof basically above the showering room.....that's going to be a pipe 3 to 4 inches in diameter and protruding of the roof a million to 2 ft. Shine a easy into the pipe and in case you notice some thing blocking off it, stuff your backyard dampen into the pipe and turn in on finished. The pipe could lower back up somewhat if blocked and then could flush unfastened and open up. you will no longer have any problems with water interior the abode, as this pipe is a ingredient of the plumbing gadget. If that does no longer paintings or you concern approximately doing this your self, call a plumber.

Yea it might be a dead animal somewhere I had this similar problem but I don't know mines might be worst because there was no smell but there was many flys crawling from vent, it was disgusting but then it just went away or decomposed. Lets just hope it's a little mouse and not a big fat cat.

Dead rats have a sweat sick smell. Look at the vent pipe, check to be sure its not plugged. Put water in all drains. Check the vent fan. Check the Attic above the bath. Good luck.

It probably is a dead animal. If you can't get at it and remove it , it will just reek for a while and be disgusting, then the smell will subside. If it's your own house, you're pretty much on your own with this, but if you rent this space, the landlord should help (and you can probably call the health department to pressure him/her if you don't get results by asking).

it is possible that the vent pipe got clogged, do the sink and tub drain slow, and gurgle. dead animal smells for months, YUCK!!! tear the walls out. are you on a septic system? check behind cabinets. mildew and mold??? trash? under tub, should have access to faucet somewhere.

sounds like a dead animal. my dad had to rip out boards and insulation to get to the cat under our house. they can smell for a long time depending on the size of the animal.

you might consider trapping a couple of flies and realeasing them in there to see where they go

a MORE probable cause is improper sewage line,

a "TRAP" is used to stop bad smells from coming back through the drain / bathtub ,etc... it collects water in the trap and thus does not allow smell to come back , so something like this could be your problem

heres a picture to show what i mean
