It could still be a scam. All they have to do to join is pay dues. Check for complaints filed with the BBB or State's Attorney. Get references and check them out.

I believe that any business can register with BBB and Chamber of Commerce. It only proves they exist not if they are honest or not. Do a google search on the company under groups and read any comments on them.

It could still be a shady opperation.
One thing to look at is how long they have been in business and whether they have any complaints against them. If they do have complaints, how many do they have and what were the out come of the complaints.
One thing to keep in mind too is the old saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't!" In other words, if you are shopping for a digital camera and everybody else is selling it for around $1,200 and you see someone selling it for $900, then I would say there is something very fishy with the one selling it at $900 and I personally would stay away from it. But, that's me!

check for complaints from those two organizations and check to see how long they have been in business and if there are any legal actions pending against them.
