how to find the range of a function?

without looking at a graph and figuring it out algebraically how would you find the range in a problem like y= the square root of (x^2 -4) if i knew the domain was ( -infinite, -2] U [2, infinite)

Differentiate the function, when dy/dx = 0, those are the points of inflexion. Derive value for all the points of inflexion within the given range. If the function does have a finite range, one of the points of inflexion will be the max and one will be the min.

I think it's just guess and check and find out where the function is at its max and min, but don't use anything between -1.999 and 1.999. Plug in numbers.
