Pluto, the last planet to join the heavenly pantheon, became the first to leave it. The status of Pluto had been under discussion for some time, but with the discovery of 2003 UB313, nicknamed Xena, the question became acute, for it seemingly had as much right as Pluto to be called a planet.
On August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union surprised the world by voting in a new definition of planet, one that would exclude Pluto and bring the total number down to eight. (There had previously been been strong speculation that the redefinition would bring the total up to 12 instead of down.)
Pluto was instead classified as a dwarf planet, along with Ceres and the aforementioned Xena. The main difference between a dwarf planet and the real thing is that the dwarf variety has not cleared the area of its orbital path.
This redefinition met with a wave of protests from those who wanted to see the ninth planet grandfathered in, including but not limited to supporters of the late Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto in 1930. His widow, however, said he would have been accepting of the IAU's decision since "he was a scientist" and understood that astronomers had to take into account newly discovered objects in the Kuiper Belt (where Pluto is located).
But opponents of Pluto's demotion remain unconsoled and have generated a thriving industry in T-shirts, mugs and other memorabilia. Among the many slogans of this movement was one which played on the mnemonic for the names of the erstwhile nine:

Ok here is the thing .. just because some scientist says that pluto is no longer a planet dosent mean it isnt.. long before the scientists said that pluto was a planet it was a ruling planet of scorpio and was looked at by star gazers.. and then all of a sudden just because some scientist gave it validity and said it was a planet ... that made it so... I think not.. now all of a sudden poor pluto.. was rulled to be too small and named a dwarf planet.. so it was tossed back into the sand box.. and told .. sory son you cant play with the big boys anymore you have to go back over there with all the other dwarfs and midgets? whatever..
Pluto didnt change... never has... it is still the same planet it ever was... the only thing that changed is the guy that was born one faithful day and then got educated and all of a sudden went to work one day and got his calipers out and gazed apon pluto and said .. HMMM .... (things that make you go Hmmm for $500 chuck) .. I think I will screw with the planets today and redo what they are... and call some dwarf planets because I dont think they are big enough...
Sounds like he was having a penis envy day if you ask me..
(oh sory I am ranting now.. Ill stop)
My bad....
just seems silly to me that we spend so much money on silly renaming of things like planets and stars when we could be oh I dont know .. curing AIDS.. and world hunger.. and making sure that children dont have to endure awful things like pedophelia and things like that anymore...
ok my rant is over now...
Blessings everyone...

no it does not, take a look at a few of the other signs, leo is ruled by a star (the sun) and Cancer is ruled by earth's only natural satelite (the moon). those in astonomy are not planets. so whether pluto was stripped of planethood or not it still remains in the sky and it still has effect on us. also pluto was never always known. before mars ruled scorpio, when pluto was discovered, and its effects were known astrologers associated the planet with scorpio. so if astrologers disregard pluto (which i doubt it) it will just go back to be doubled up on mars with aries

Pluto is Scorpio's ruling planet only in western astrology. Mars is still considered the ruling planet of Vedic astrology. I would consider Pluto to be secondary. It's orbit is so slow that you can't take into account any aspects it has (besides natal aspects). Mars, on the other hand, will give you information with solar returns, transits, etc.

The ruler of Scorpio is Pluto. Prior to the discovery of the ninth planet, Scorpio was ruled by Mars, which is still considered co-ruler. The sign of cosmic purpose, Scorpio is considered the success sign. Self contained and self centered, concentrated Scorpios usually succeed in what they set out to accomplish.

Your question is brilliant. It would affect the whole zodiac in a way, wouldn't it. Astrologists claim there is a balance and association between all the signs based on their ruling planets. Wonder if astrology will now go the way of Greek mythology on which it is also strongly based. Great question! I hope some astrologists weigh in on it. I'll add it to my watch list.
