depends on the situation, the intention and gravity of the act. when people are forced to lie for the good of others (a jewish mother who lies to save her child from danger during nazi tyranny did not commit sin.)

There are some that would answer an unequivocal "yes"--but I believe that the sin is in the intent of the lie. If the truth would harm another person-then how can the lie be the sin?

Yes, all forms of deception is sinful. Who is the "father" of lies? Scriptures say Satan is the father of all lies. I personally do not want anything to do with him.
There are no big lies or little lies, no white ones, no black ones, none worse than the next or better than the last.
It is best, if possible, to always speak the truth or be silent. It would be better to say nothing, than to lie.
Scriptures also say NO LIARS will inherit the Kingdom of God. There will be NO liars in Heaven.

Thou shalt not bear false witness. The 9th of the Ten Commandments.

If lying is a sin, someone will have to explain why Jesus told his family members to tell the soldiers, who came to his mothers home looking for him, that he was not there, when, in fact, he was hidden in the house!
