Try VideoLAN's VLC. It's free. I have been using it for a while and in my experience it has played every thing that I threw at it. It's got almost all the codecs built into it and the download file is small. In some case it even played corrupted files that made Windows Media Player and others crash. If you are a tinkerer you can download the source code of the player also. Here's the link

This media player can play any formats including real and quick time.

It depends if you run microsoft then weindows media is best to run it all but if you run through apple then use quicktime
