Question about our democracy?

In having a federal system, what are advantages to our democracy? Also, are there disadvantages or factors in a federal system that work against participation in government?

The United States of America is not a Democracy; we are a Federal Republic. Remember?

the advantage is we have free rights and the disadvantage is too many people want different things
