Hi,

I think there are several reasons.

(1) They want 2 points.

(2) They don't read the question carefully, then proceed to answer a question that was never actually asked.

(3) Regardless of the quality or intent of questions, they generally prefer to use this forum as a platform for ranting, insulting people, ridiculing points of view, inflating their egos or making "jokes"--rather than answering questions. In other words, Y!A is used for a form of personal entertainment, but not for question answering.

(4) They fail to see the value of the question, judge it as a "bad question", then make a (confrontational) comment to make this "point".

(5) They hold their personal opinions in such high regard that expressing them is top priority--secondary to answering questions. Unfortunately, their irrelevant answers can sometimes lead to a "Snorefest" or "Yawnfest".

(6) They honestly believe their answer to contain useful content, when it actually does not. Their answer may actually contain good ideas, but is rendered useless as the result of poor organization of thought or unintelligible grammar/spelling.

(7) Sometimes a question is too abstract, contains "hidden" or "implied" questions, or is otherwise difficult for the average reader to grasp. When this happens, it can generate a lot of poor answers from people who don't "get it".

(8) Some people may find, after beginning to type or half-way through an attempt at answering, that they actually have nothing to say. They go ahead and answer the question anyway.

(9) Some questions may antagonize the general population. For example, the question may contain racist implications, or otherwise suggest something that most people find disagreeable.

NOTE: This question could potentially fall into this last category, because some might take it to imply that many "answerers" are not doing a very good job. Some answerers may feel that your question is directed against them somehow, because they tend to answer questions in a way that they feel you are "judging" as having "nothing to say".

Hope this helps! Good luck in your search for quality answers.

Yeah. And the flip side of the coin is -- Why do people bother wasting their points asking extremely stupid questions?
