because the jails are full...the homeless shelters are full...to create jobs for the attendants and other medical staff...need more human subjects available for drug research...maybe it's a crazy bureaucratic experiment!

I say a lot of it is for the money.I think they should make hospitals per disorder. Why would you want to put an OCD patient in with a schizophrenic,or a person who suffers from panic attacks with a person suffering from dementia and etc.I know there are a lot of different mental disorders just that they should group these institutions better, and put therapist that know what they are doing in the right institutions.I know I be scared out of my mind going to a institution and being around mainly people who suffer from far worse disorder then myself.I would think I get more help being around people I can relate to.

People are put in psyc. institutions because they are at a place in life where they are dangerous to themselves and to others and their families are not able to control or care for them at home. It must take such deep strength for children or parents to commit their loved one to one of these places without feeling guilt making this decision must be the hardest choice....some of these people might get enough help with drugs and therapy that they are able to come back to live a normal life. Hopefully with new breakthroughs people with mental disorders will be treated and released in the future. .

these days it's not easy to be placed in an institution for mentally ill. you really have to be so severe with many hospitalizations and inability to care for yourself and possible threat to others. the finances involved in supporting this isn't available as it use to be with the change in benefits. in calif reagen let out most of the patients to enter board & cares which were inadequate and some left those for the street or jail others went home others went to outpt clinics. so in my expereince it's rare people placed long term in pych wards..

Could you be little more specific with your question? Are you asking why the mind stops functioning properly or why society has built institutions?

Because they could harm themselves if they are dillusional, for instance thinking they are superman and can fly and jump off a building.
If they are suffereing severe paranoia, they could think the someone at the supermarket is poisoning their food and kill them.
Others simply can not function in society, not being able to grocery shop, clean their homes, are scared of everything. There are many , many things, and if they are institutionalized meds , therapy are not working for them.
