I have a little worm in my tank. It looks like fish poop, a dark red color and almost an inch long. I have a 55gal fresh water tank with cichlids in it. I stirred up the rocks, and a few hours later there was what I thought was a piece of fish poop floating around...but it was swimming! It was about an inch long and freaky as can be! Like poop that came alive! Anyone got any ideas what it could be or where it could've came from??? Thanks, The poop-worm pet owner

Usually fish that eat a lot of live baits will wind up with worms in their tanks, but usually they are smaller white ones that only come out when it dark.

It does sound strange, but as to what it could be the best thing to do would be to post this question out on either Aquaria Central or AquariumBoard.

Here are the links - good luck!

They could be tubiflex worms or blood worms that have been to date unnoticed in your tank. Check out you filter media and stir up the gravel a little bit to see if there are more. They could have easily been introduce months ago into your tank and are living off the uneaten food in your tank.
If they were nematodes (parasites), they can get quite long and you would have noticed a pot-bellied appearance of your fish. If so the tank can be fed a worm er now and again in three weeks.
One rule applies, to calm the nerves of the hobbyist; most worms seen outside the fish are usually not internal parasites and not considered as harmful to the fish. Parasitic or harmful worms will not be visible on the gravel or the glass of the aquarium.

Could be a parasite that isn't good for your fish. Do any of your fish have holes in them? Are their fins attached without crusty stuff on them? What about their heads? Any holes there, besides the obvious, eyes and mouth holes?
