Not for midwives or Bradley folks... I want to know if the common person knows the short and/or long term effects of an epidural on a baby and labor/delivery. My guess is "no".

The medication given to the mother with an epidural does NOT effect the baby. The medication doesn't cross the placenta. If you get a shot of Demerol prior to getting the epidural, that will effect the baby.

As far as the effect of the epidural on the mother during labor/delivery...my advice is to get it.

i know the effect i also know a women getting a c section IS REQUIRED to get a epidural. I also KNOW I have nothing to prove by suffering thru needless pain. Very little meds get thru to the baby and can cause them to be a tad groggy and sleepy. I know they would never be done if they caused death or deformities. So my bet they are SAFE even women who go into pre term labor when the doc knows the baby will only be 2 pounds or so IT'S STILL THOUGHT to be safe and the mom can still get a epidural. analgesia on the newborn has been extensively investigated. It carries both potential benefits and potential risks to the fetus. The overall effect is to neither harm nor help the unborn child. Any technique used during labour which decreases the mother’s stress should be of benefit to the child. Epidural analgesia has been demonstrated to have this effect

in case you have a C-area, then sure, they provides you with discomfort meds to take domicile. in case you have a vaginal delivery, you in all probability won't choose something better than ibuprofin, it extremely is attainable OTC. whilst it comes time so you may be released from the well-being middle, while you're nevertheless in that a lot discomfort then of course it relatively is okay to ask the first practitioner approximately it. generally via that factor the only ingredient that hurts is the place you tore or had an episiotomy - tylenol, ibuprofin, epsom salt baths, and ice packs would desire to be all you decide on for that. something of your physique may be exhausted and sore, yet no longer painful. restoration after my first took approximately 2 weeks. restoration after my 2d took a lot longer, yet it relatively is by using fact I wasn't healing ideal and had problems which at last brought about surgical technique at 5 months postpartum - long tale. when I had the surgical technique i mandatory and all started healing ideal, i substitute into feeling much better in in basic terms some days.

An epidural has no drugging effect on the baby. It is better than intavenous painkillers because those can make the baby sleepy and have possibly lower Apgar scores after delivery.

The baby is inside you for such a short time after being given any pain meds or epidural that there is little or no effect, or at least lasting ones on the baby.

I had an epidural and spinal with my kids. They are not harmful to the baby and you are no less of a women for taking them. I remember everything about my kids births and wasn't groggy at all. My kids were all screaming and perfect at birth. People that give you a hard time for getting pain medication should go get a root canal without medicine. Experience THAT!
