If I am trapped in an elevator with any man and I get that not so safe feeling, I could care less about race, I am grabbing my phone. We have instincts for a reason, women have to play it safe, cause the signs are always there, read "the gift of fear" and you won't think stereotypical you will think those gals had all the signs and ignored all of them cause society wants us to feel guilty for following our over complusive warning instincts. Sorry but I'm not trying to offend just protect myself, and I can't do that if I worry about hurting somebody's feelings. This has been a question that still remains, and most of my friends are Black, and? Safety first questions later, big hugs

The comment that follows your question is true. I didn't know what to make of your question until I read the comment.
I wonder if a Black woman was alone on an elevator...would she clutch her purse when a White person enters?
Honestly, it is unfortunate that women must feel protective and take safeguards while they are alone, despite the race of either party. I do believe in women being prepared to handle herself in any confrontation. But the essence of this question was related to responses that are racist.
My hope after years of supporting civil and human rights movements is that this question brings out the very best in people through their answers. Sometimes I cringe to think we still have so far to go in fighting racism.
I hope the question was helpful for those who need to rethink their learned behaviors. Some people still react to stereotypes without realizing their impulsive response is something that they unknowingly learned from the wrong source.

for me it depends more on how someone is dressed. I am more uncomfortable on an elevator with a guy whose cap is turned around backwards and wears his jeans low enough that it shows his underwear. the sporty, baggy clothes look really bothers me too.

Beware of any man who has you in a tight situation, carry mase or stungun, learn how to fight, or get a handgun already. Dont dismiss these ways to protect yourself, when your about to die or be raped, and you decided against owning and carrying a weapon, only blame yourself.

I don't carry a purse. I get nervous no matter what the race the person with me is. I could get robbed (or worse) by someone of any race.
