As opposed to merely being a male who sires offspring?
Being interested and intimately involved in the upbringing of one's offspring. Being there for the good things and the bad, the smelly diapers and the colic and trips to the park. Being concerned about how one's child turns out, and taking steps to ensure that he/she is brought up "right", according to whatever definition of "right" one might have.
Oh. And fathers also have an important role in introducing their children to snipe hunts and Matchbox cars.
