Humans do not confine themselves to rationality. That which causes superstitious beliefs and general foolhardiness is the same thing that causes hypocrisy.

Because people are sheeple! The biggest hypocrites are those who believe in religion. Any religion, it's rather great, in a way. One can sin and hey, just ask for forgiveness and you're good to go! Give me a break.
