I want a sterling silver or white gold ring...which metal is better and why?

Actually white gold is not anymore expensive than yellow gold. They are both measured by their percentages of pure gold within the ring. Platnium is very expensive, but gold is gold regardless if it is yellow, white or pink. There are varying qualities of gold.

Silver is softer and will show more wear over time. I have tons of silver and love it, but for a ring, I'd go with gold. With gold, the higher the karat the higher percentage of pure gold within, so the softer it is. 14-18k is good. I have some 24k pieces and they are pretty scratched up because of the softness of the metal.

It's really a question of care, How long do you want to keep it, What type of maintenance are you able to do on it, & personal preference.

White Gold - Pro's

More Durable, scratch resistant, does not tarnish.

White Gold - Con's

It is a mixed metal, usually with nickel, beware of allergies
Most rings are coated with rhodium to make it really shine "the white silver look" (which is a partial pro) The rhodium coating has to be re done every 1 to 1 1/2 years. Costing additional money... con.

Silver - Pro

Less expensive!
Silver with copper gives it the "blue white color"

Silver - Con

More care. Corrosion &
Tarnishing! Which wil happen no matter what, the maintenance on that.

Gold is a more malleable (soft, pliable) metal and will show scratches more easily. Sterling silver will not show wear as much as white gold. White gold is also plated with rhodium to give it a whiter than its natural grey hue and, after 12-18 months, that rhodium will wear away and the ring will need to be replated. Also, some white gold contains nickel, which some people are allergic to. Sterling silver is usually a mix of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, to give it more durability and stability, whereas fine silver is about 99.9% pure silver and is too soft for heavy-duty objects.

Sterling silver will make for a longer-lasting ring with less upkeep.

it's your ring. you can have it be sterling silver if you want it to be. the only thing with sterling silver is that is tarnishes very easily. gold is definitely more preferred by most people. platinum is the best, but very very expensive.

white gold is EXPENSIVE! So is Sterling Silver, but it's not NEAR as pricy, and I think it looks better by far.
