It is a combination of dead keratinized cells, sebum which is oil and debris. You should not pick your pimples, start using an exfoliator, depending on what type of skin you have you will be able to tolerate different kinds of exfoliators. A really good one to use off and on is Glycagel 15% it's good for at home use. Use it 10 days in a row then 5 days off and so on. Let it sit on your face for approx 5-10 min. If it tingles to you, or it's too much take it off immediately and decrease your time you apply it.
Acne is mainly caused by people not using the correct products for their face. Go to an Esthetician and try to go to a Holistic Spa so you will have natural products that they can recommend to you that will be specific for your skin type.

"Whiteheads are the direct result of skin pores becoming clogged with sebum (naturally occurring oil) and dead skin cells. Once this combination of dead skin cells and sebum combine with bacteria the result is an infection. The infection remains below the surface of the skin forming a whitehead. There are several treatments used to treat acne, including benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and herbal treatments."
Puss in a normal wound contains white blood cells (leukocytes) mainly, plus the infected material, T-cells and that are all trying to fight the infection.
