Everytime I think the AA is stupid, something happens that reminds me how far we have to go. I have friends of all races and ethnic backgrounds. It is a shame that some people are still discrimated against, but it is also a shame when my friends don't get into med school cause they are white...this is not fair. how do we balance this? I know this girl who got fired because she got pregnant!! This really happened...in 2006!! no matter how many times you think yuo are getting ahead, you always get reminded the you are a minority somewhere along the lines and that the "ol boys club" still exist. Is AA our only defense against this? the laws just don't work anymore!!

Stopspuck you are so right...it has always been a class struggle and not a racial divide. But those on top want to confuse those on the bottom for sure...

I don't think we need affirmative action for races and genders anymore. What people should really be worried about is equality for different socio-economic backgrounds. For example, I'm at a really well rated private university. I come from a pretty poor background, and there's virtually no one else like me here. When I told someone I had spent many years living in a trailer, they actually didn't know people still live in trailers! I was lucky, I was athletic and used that card to get where I am. But there's a lot of really intelligent kids out there that won't get a decent shot at a good school because they can't afford the prep for it. Look at Harvard. A huge majority of its students went to private schools. A poor kid from the inner city definitely didn't go to a private school, and he was working to get food for his family instead of meeting with a private college counselor after school. That's where affirmative action should take place, and hopefully ultimately help eliminate poverty and better educate the entire country.

AA just isn't fair the way it is, and it simply shouldn't be used as a deciding factor. Simply giving someone an edge for their race because of racial prejudices that exist doesn't solve a problem in the long run, and as you mentioned, it's completely unfair for those who lose their chance because it was given to someone that could have been less qualified for the sake of numbers and percentages.
On another note, I completely agree with stopspucks88's response about socio-economic backgrounds. There are many many brilliant people who are held back by time and money constraints that are beyond their control. However, there is no easy way to fix this, and we are left with a similar problem regardless.

Affirmative action isn't accessible in California's public faculties. they are open at inner maximum universities like Harvard and different Ivy Leagues. Harvard boasted an remarkable 11.8% black pupil representation, now it is a victory provided that the black inhabitants in a regular state college is < 2 - 5%. Affirmative action facilitates deserving minorities to attain fulfillment and promises place sort examples for others. i does no longer strategies if Harvard desperate to have a 60% black representation, because it is long late.

We'll always need Affirmative action as long as there is bigotry and unfairness, discrimination and prejudices and violation of equality rights. I know I heard about the reverse discrimination. wherein the whites are discriminated against and advantages are given to the minorities. Even in today's work force and industry, women are paid much less for the comparable jobs unlike the men. And if you are of childbearing age, chances of getting a job is
slim. You can change your citizenship but you can never change your ancestry and your facial features or the color of your skin,. religion, or your gender. So like it or not, you'll always be reminded that you are a minority. It's one thing to adopt the laws and it's quite another to see it implemented or in action.

Sure, we do. Only the "uncle Toms out there think that we don't." Without Affirmative Action, minorities would not stand a chance. How odd is it that those black people who already made it, thanks to AA, think that black people do not need affirmative action. Blacks are marginated not because they are not smart, but because we have so many "uncle Toms." I have known so many brilliant black people that cannot make it in jobs because there is so much prejudice in our society.
