my university, always being on a power trip, has seemingly blocked every internet port known to man on its server. AOL IM doesn't work, nor my university email through thunderbird, limewire and all other file transfers...I doubt that if I go and ask the tech department for a published list they'd gladly hand it over, so how do I go about finding which ports are open? Any easy way..

You could run a ports scan and see what the results are? You are probably looking for some proxy solution in the end. You might want to concentrate on that instead of finding a hole that does not exist. Good Luck.

Go to grc.com and do a port scan, but if they are that tight, you aren't going to find anything useful open. You might want to get a cheap dial up account just for IM and simple browsing. That way you are not dependent on them. Call IT and ask what you can and can't do. It might be simpler than you think or it might be impossible, but talk is cheap.
