Now that I'm in junior high, it's especially important to prevent body odor. In physical education, our teacher told us to bring deodorant to keep in our lockers. My mom seems to disapprove. She says that "We Asians don't have bad odor". I kept telling her that ever since 5th grade, our teachers told us to use deodorant. Well, when we went to Target, I said, "I need deodorant for P.E." She FINALLY said ok. Now it's passed a few days of school. I realized that I need one for home. I told my mom today, but she seemed really pissed off that I said so. What should I do? I know I should use deodorant for everyday life, not only for P.E.

You're mom is not wack or crazy. Eventhough she's wrong, she's just doing what she thinks is protecting you. Get on the internet and find information on the safety of deodorant. You said that she's Asian, so go to Wikipedia and go to her native language and print info about the safety of deodorants. You can't just sneak behind her back or go against her ban, but you can try and change her mind. I promise you if she sees this attempt she'll give. And if she doesn't then listen to Saphire and get good and stinky and hang with her REAL close! ;o)
( a very adorable suggestion, but last resort, cause I bet the scientific proof will be effective)
Good luck!

I think you should tell your mom that you noticed that you are sweating more now and you are afraid of being "the smelly girl" in school or in your neighborhood.

Why is she taking it personally that you want to use deodorant? Ask her what the big deal is. All races should use deodorant or some other form of anti-perspirant unless it is against their religion. Does your mom use deodorant? That might be the problem, because if she doesn't, she won't think you need it.

Just talk to her about it and be open. You should always have open communications with your parents.

every body sweats no matter what country you come from I like your adult way of speaking and thinking very mature I say. But why can't you bring home the deodorant and take it back to P.E when you need to. Any way if this is not possible then explain to your mom that you really need to have some at home as well. Good luck

I am in jr. high too so I kinda understand how you are coming from because I have to ask for another one. I would use the deodorant you have for home use, but just make sure you use a lot so it will last you through the day and tell your mom that it is important to have good hygiene both at home and at school and if she says no, then save up some money and just buy one.

Your Mom is being defencive. Perhaps someone made a nasty racial remark to her at some time and she's taking the deodorant thing personally, hence the "We Asians..." remark.

She needs to understand that everyone perspires (especially after strenuous exercise) and that deodorant is a part of a daily hygiene routine in North America. It has nothing to do with race or culture.

Ask you school counsler to write your mom a note about using it!! Or ask your Physical health teacher if she has something that she could give to you for your mom to read about it!! There has to be something out there that she can read about it !! Someone needs to teach your mom about this stuff!!! What about looking it up on the internet? Everybody sweats and even younger kids need deodorant sometimes!!! My grandson uses it and he's only 8 yrs.old!!!! My kids are part asian and they use it!! Everbody has an Oder when they sweat!!! Asian or not!!! She must be afraid people think you stink or something?!! saying we asian don't have bad odor!! Yes they do!! I was married to one and he and all the ones i knew wore deodrant!!! Whats wrong with her!! She needs to be Educated on this !!!!!! Good luck!! when you find something for her to read about it, leave it laying around the house for her to find!!! She'll read it!!

Well try this. Tell her it time she started shopping in the "All for a Dollar Stores." They are all over the place. It cost a dollar for just about every kind of soap, household detergent, tooth paste, toilet paper, spices, hair care items, etc. She is probably annoyed at the price of these items at the supermarket and department stores. I am sure it is the cost of the items that grate on her and not that she doesn't want to get them for you. Tell her how much she'll save and when she realizes that you understand the price of everything she has to buy she will appreciate your caring about how she has to make ends meet.
Good luck

Look at health food stores for Salt crystals. They're about $7-8 but last for months and months. You just get it wet and rub it under your arms after you've bathed. They work and don't smell perfumy and don't leave white or gell ick all over your clothes. Try to talk to your mom. Tell her that she may not think you smell but it makes you worry and it's just not worth having something else to worry about as a teenager. Offer to pay for it yourself. If she still says no, ask teacher to help.
