I recall that in the early years there were Mets fans all over the country (yes, even in Chicago in 1969), but that was when they had a reputation as loveable.

I happen to live in Mariners country (Bellingham, Washington, not far from the Canadian border) but I've been a Mets fan since 1963. To be fair, I lived in New York then. I also am a Mariners fan.

No, of course not, but then again, how many people in Houston root for the Padres, or how many people in Cincinnati root for Florida?
And of course, NOBODY likes the Yankees, except in NY.
