The flame does not have the proper air/gas mixture. The orifice may be partially blocked or the air shutter may have been moved while cleaning or food may have fallen into the mixing chamber.
Since you do not say how old or make and model it would be difficult to be more specific without writing a mini service manual saying if it is this type do this or if it is that type do that.

The air/gas mix sounds wrong. Try this >> Raise the deck cover plate up --look at each gas valve. You will see a "shutter cover" that you can open or close. This regulates the air. While the burner is on--try "adjusting" this shutter cover and watch the flame. You might need to use a screwdriver to loosen a set screw on each shutter. Make sure the shutter opening is not blocked by (??) food spillage, etc. blocking air off. Of course--you are using the proper type of fuel gas for this stove--right? Using propane instead of natural gas can certainly cause this also. Good Luck.

turn on the gas without a pot. Is it even all around the burner or is it uneven. Is the color the same everywhere? I have found that folks will boil over a pot and junk up the burner. Turn it all off, take a tooth pick and clean out all the little holes or if you can figure it out, take off the burner and soak it in soapy water in the sink...See if that helps.. if not then call for help.

The burner is grimy and not getting adequate air. in case you're burning propane, the top of the flame would be yellow. it is common. the completed flame should not be yellow. whether it is, it is with the aid of a similar undertaking (loss of oxygen) as with organic gasoline. Burning with inadequate air is undesirable for the burner (it is going to reason soot buildup, which will make the undertaking worse). it is likewise risky. Incomplete combustion (burning gasoline without adequate air) no longer in basic terms produces a yellow flame, in spite of the undeniable fact that it additionally produces carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, in spite of the undeniable fact that it is going to kill you. end using the range till it is serviced.
