Most colleges have a writing center which is filled with people that love to read papers. I know I was one of them. If nothing else, find an English major and become friends with them. If you are a first year student, profs are normally nice on the first paper and will give you feed back on it in order to better your writing. Remember when writing, be straight forward, do not repeat things over and over. Stick to one idea, if you try to answer many question in one paper, you will probably miss something and only hit on a little of the answer. And it is always a good idea to learn more about the profs.
All profs grade different. Some who do not have a writing back ground and/or teach freshman classes do not require a lot. a few well placed "big words" will impress math teachers.
It is good to pay attention in class and throw in a few ideas the prof provided during lecture. Profs always like to hear their own voice and feel that someone is listening.
Locate a writing center and even check with the English department.

nobody who would do it for free would do it well... unless its a relative. I hear you about the classmates... but what if you and one of the "smarter students" swapped papers and you proof read theirs... it would be a good deal.
