Hard to say. I think there are several poignant fears that reside in most people all at once. Nobody wants to feel useless or worthless. Few people relish the thought of death. Fewer still want to die a gruesome death. Loss of a loved one has to be high on most peoples list. Of those who are clinically depressed, the fear might be that nothing will ever change. For some people, fear of spiders or fires or natural disasters might be the worst fear. It's so PERSONAL an issue and so very unique to the individual. Even if a survey was done, the only result the survey would yield is that OF THE PEOPLE SURVEYED, X got the highest percentage, followed by Y and Z. Good question, by the way!

Failure!! I am a gerontological nurse and a large part of our population is over 65. You would be surprised at how accepting these people are about the subject of death. Young children usually dont think much about death unless they have just experienced a love ones passing. Failure occurs amongst all ages, races, and creeds. People dont like how they feel after failing at a task. This tends to make it a fear we begin experiencing at an early age.

Most people fear the unknowns. They fear things they have never encountered, especially other people who are not like themselves. They also have developed fear habits from watching TV and scary movies. Anything we do in repetitive fashion trains our brains to respond easily, so we fall into the habit of fearing kidnappers, trailer park residents, bad cops, Arab terrorists, etc. from the constant drumbeat of these fears working our levers.
If you want change, turn off the TV, keep your quarters in your pocket. Your money is your vote and the machines don't count. Buy local, live local, know your neighbors.

Embarrassment.
No one wants to be humiliated and exposed in front of the whole world, as people never forget.
Do you remember or recall when Giants pitcher Juan Marichal hit Dodgers catcher John Roseboro with a bat?
Why? That happened over 40 years ago.
People never forget

other than survival type stuff, most people have two types of fear:
fear of not getting what they want and fear of loosing what they have. fear of loosing their "mask" is so great in some people that they would rather die than drop the mask.

I think people subconsciously fear death the most. Whether they no it or not that is the one thing people fear the most. Not knowing when they are going to die, not knowing when, not knowing how, and not knowing how painfull it will be.These are all the things people think of with the topic of their death gets brought up. So in my eyes I think most people fear death the most.

i think the the thing that people fear the most is themselves, so they try to hide what they really are, and mimic something else.
