I live in Texas and don't believe in can be classified as either southern or western. It's a combination of the two. The true Southwest begins in New Mexico.

I am a NATIVE TEXAN so my answer counts WAY more that those wussie answers you've had so far.
Texas has many characteristics of the South, and of the West. It is truly "southwestern." But if I had to pick, I'd say it's more Western than Southern.

Just for the record Texas is a southwestern state. Texas is too big to say it is one thing be it culture, music or whatever. South Texas is 180 deg. from West, East or North Texas. West Texas is totally different from East Texas. Central Texas is really pretty with the Hill country.
To answer your question...The eastern side is more southern and the western side is more western.

Well, is Texas sittin' on the verandah sippin' mint juleps or is it cowboy spurs jinglin' and a'janglin'?
Even though Texas is not as far south as Florida or Hawaii (the most southern state), it's in the south, but it's western.
