The good guys in white, bad guys in black? White and Black knights?

Like mentioned hockey is dark at home now. And you did ask this in hockey. They changed it to dark at home and said it Traditionally was that way back in the day.

I think what they really found was clothing sales. And as mentioned they have concentrated on clothing sales with 3rd "special occasion" Jerseys and 4th "vintage" jerseys. And reverse (away game used at home) jersey games.

Anyway, turns out Dark Jersey's typically sell better. Probably because your mustard and beer stains don't show as badly. And kids started finding black stylish too. SOoo, they switched. Best that the fans are dressed the same as the home team and not opposite. That is, best the fans see the home team in as many jerseys as possible to create sales, but a majority of the time in the best seller.

The CFL (Canadian Football) has also changed so it isn't an automatic white jersey at home.

The next answer tells you that after 50 years of doing it this way, thus the way they did it in modern times and the way they did it for the majority of the years of the league, the only reason they changed is because the could. I still say it was the money.

The rules vary from sport to sport. In the NFL, the home team chooses which one they wear. In the NHL, the visiting team now wears white (this change was put in a couple of seasons ago).

One of the reasons the home team wears white is so that fans can see the visiting teams in their colours. Otherwise every visiting team the fans at the game see are wearing white.

Actually a bunch of crazy talk. Ok home team PICKS which jersey, the away team is stuck with the other one. So home picks white then away wears dark, and vice-versa. Most Home will wear dark now for the intimidation effect. Does it work? Proably not but they like to do it anyway. Now here is a perfect example of an attemtp to use colors though. Ok last year the Steelers and Texans played. The Texans picked to wear white, so the Steelers would have to wear Black and it should be hotter for THEM. Well it didn't work as the Texans, who should have had the advantage of being cooler, were the ones who were sluggish.

Thats not true. Remember the nhl switched the jersey like a few years ago. Now they wear their dark colored jerseys.

For example: Carolina wears their red jerseys at home and white jerseys on the road. The leafs wear their dark blue jerseys at home and their white jerseys on the road.

I dont know about the other sports.

The above is false!

If you go back to the 1900-1945 Darks where worn at home and whites when Away.

The reason it changed in the forties is that one of Cost. It was difficult to keep the white Jerseys White from the sweat, blood and dirt. and teams didn't always have time to have them cleaned. So that's why they went to darks when away.

The change that 3 years ago because the league said that they now had the facilities to keep the uniforms clean and teams typically have 3 set of uniform when they go on road trips.

Personally I like it better when the whites where worn at home but I thing it's because that's just the way I grew up with Hockey

my 2 cents.

They are switching back next year, becasue of the new Reebok uniforms. In recent years NHL teams have taken to designing and wearing "third jerseys" and this year we're seeing quite a few "vintage jerseys," as teams resurrect abandoned logos and colors from years past. Teams want to show off these new (or old, as the case may be) sweaters at home, where loyal fans will dash to the souvenir stand and buy their own.

Not sure about the other sports.N.H.L. teams only wear the white ones out of town. They still wear the dark uniforms at home. The only times they might change is if the colours of both home sweaters are too close,Or if the Great teams like the Canadiens are doing events at the Bell center.Like retiring another number to add to the great ones all ready retired...I think it is probably 20 or so.The Laffs have two retired numbers---what does that tell you?

Not in hockey do they any more. Not in football do they nor in soccer or rugby. In basketball, the Lakers and Pacers wear yellow at home.

Even baseball now sees teams wearing even those dopey batting practice dark color jerseys at home at times.

You're living in the past there, dude. Yes, white is the dominant color in most sports but not like it was.

Depends on the sport, and the league.

MLS uses the dark jersey for home, while highschoolers wear whites at home.

I don't know about always white, but teams usually have a neutral colour, like black or white, and a brighter colour, such as red or blue. The neutral is always as visitors or home teams as is the colours. This ensures that no game has two teams wearing the same colour (or similar).
