Love is a heat in the blood that sets fire to the brain.

Love is sudden and complete devotion and affection for another when that feeling is not accompanied by crazy impatience (that impatient "love" is infatuation).

"Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved."

-- William Shakespeare
Sonnet 116

Love is an unqualified commitment to serve in good faith.

Love is therefore differentiated from "being in love" -- the latter being used to describe an emotional (and usually romantic) fondness towards the object of affection.

For instance:

"I am in love with my wife" means that I have that "warm, fuzzy feeling in my heart" when I think of my wife -- and that I prefer her company almost always, regardless the situation. However, the statement is subjective and unprovable.

By contrast, "I love my wife" is a statement that is both objective and provable. The evidence of my love for my wife is in the things I do for her -- from making sure her vehicle is properly maintained to providing her with appropriate physical comfort.

That I derive pleasure from serving my wife does not diminish the fact that such service is the evidence essential to love.

Indeed, I've done volunteer work benefitting people whose lack of gratitude and sour demeanor made serving them an onerous chore; nevertheless, my service derived from -- and was the evidence of -- my love for them.

I wasn't "in love" with any of them, but I yet loved them.
