I'm a senior who is applying early decision to northwestern. i have a 4.0 out of 4.6 gpa, and im number 4 in my class, and a 2090 on my SAT's. All of these fall in line with what northwestern is looking for, but I have one problem. Last year, i got a C in my Precalculus honors class. I feel like i should include an explanation in my application because it seems like a giant red mark. but the truth of the matter is that i slacked off in that class, just like i do in every class, so i don't have any real excuse. i'm thinking i should admit that i didn't work as hard as i couldv'e but i learned my lesson because instead of sneaking away with at least a B like i had in the past, this time i ended up with a C. but do you think this it's not wise to admit all of this?

this might be a long shot, but is your math teacher writing your recommendation by any chance? if he or she is, that may be a good opportunity. they might say "so-and-so had a little trouble focusing to start, but once he engaged himself in the material it was clear that he could handle the challenge."
i wouldn't recommend telling northwestern that you're a slacker, but if you feel that it's the right thing to do, go for it. it's a tough school, but your class rank should help you out. i really can't give you much advice, other than to stop slacking off now (i know how hard it is, believe me), and get those SATs a little higher if possible.
good luck.

Wite a cover letter. "Dear Sirs, I have a difficult time in Precalculus honors last year. I since have joined a study group and sought out tutoring help. Thank you for your consideration in this matter."

I wouldn't mention it. You're human. It's not like you flunked an entire quarter of classes. If it's an issue they'll ask you, but I doubt it would ever come up.
Colleges are looking for much more than grades and test scores.

You have nothing to worry about and absolutely no reason to mention the grade. Your SAT scores are in the top 1% and so is your GPA. I haven't a clue what you're troubled with.

I love your honesty and your explanation shows you are willing to work hard now. Stick with it.
Your other grades and stuff will help give you a better advantage. Relax, pray, have faith in God and he will grant you the desires of your heart. I know, It worked for me.

Your SAT score indicates that you are a B average student. Perhaps you should consider Notre Dame or Purdue instead.

no you should not admit to slacking off in an application for anything. unless of course you don't want to get what ever it is you are applying for.

i would not say anything because college wont care what Ur excuse are they just want to know what you got and that's it. Ur GPA should say enough for you though.
