Has anyone noticed how horrible some of these questions on here are worded? And the spelling? Sometimes I can't even figure out what the person is trying to say! Is there some kind of e-mail/internet shorthand? Because its driving me crazy!

And yes, I know my own grammar isn't perfect, either - but at least its understandable.

A lot of people will come down on you for nit-picking in this question, but I agree with you. There's no real reason not to click on spell check and just read over your answer once before submitting. I don't talk TOO much about it anymore as I just end up feeling like a dog chasing his tail. Your words are a representation of you, and on-line, it's mostly the ONLY representation you have. Why not present yourself as best as possible?
P.S. The only time it's acceptable is text messaging. I write EVERYTHING phonetically or it would take all day. :-)

It's the fast paced information age and the low personal standards of people when it comes to grammar, punctuation and spelling that result in what you see on this site.
Some say it's because everyone's in a hurry so they sacrifice proper spelling and grammar in the interest of time. Then again, there are a lot of people that I know who value correct grammar, spelling, etc. and all they need to do is to type faster without sacrificing quality of the communication.

Email/Internet shorthand/slang is annoying - AGREED!
I received an email from a former student and had to have it translated by my neice because I had NO idea what the student was talking about at all! It is as if the internet has helped teens/people create their own "Nerd Language!"

Yes, I think that my generation has definitely suffered a decline in spelling and grammatical skills due to the Internet and im. We now spend a lot of time on the computer (perhaps more than necessary?) and less time physically writing. I have had English teachers complain about this before, and I have to admit that I agree, because we are getting less practice at writing.

It's natural to have a different writing system for different types of writing, just like how you use different language in different speaking situations. I think that requiring people to use all one system in every writing situation is unflexible. Not to mention that it's pointless, anyway, because people will continue to use language in the ways they want to get the results they want, regardless of what grammarians say.

Don't blame e-mail or the net. Kids have gotten lazy and schools have gotten lax. My mother was a great speller and she stressed it in us.
