Economics says there are two ways to lower the price on anything.

1. Increase the supply (get more oil)
2. Decrease the demand (burn less fuel)

Accomplish either and the price will fall.

You do realize that a significant portion of that price is tax and in California (the only state I have intimate knowledge of) those taxes are placed into the general fund and not used to improve or maintain the highway system. They are not used for research into alternate energy. They are not applied to mass transit programs. They are used, in part, to further some social program or another.

I make every effort to hold elected officials accountable but I sometimes feel like I am the ONLY one doing so.

Hope this answers your question.

BTW, increasing taxes on the oil companies will do nothing unless you want to return to the days of Jimmy Carter and 17% plus inflation rates by direct control on pricing. After all, if you study economics at all, you understand that the consumer pays 100% of all taxes. You can tax a company but in the end the purchaser will be paying the bill.

If you have not noticed, gas prices have dropped dramatically (I live in Michigan and the price is the lowest it has been in 7 months). And last month, BP announced they will be shutting down a huge amount of their oil lines for reconstruction. So why did gas go so low? 1. The gas-consuming season of road trips a.k.a. summer is gone and 2. being an election year, many politicans want the domestic issues such as gas and health care to be toned down and unnoticed so they can campaign for other issues and hope those domestics go unnoticed.

Why would they want to? Millions of people are making money hand over fist with gas prices up. When the rich can make money by lowering gas prices, that's when it'll happen.
