I know Mel Gibson was a complete jerk for saying what he did, and it is reprehensible to burn the Koran, or write jokes about Muslims, but does anyone but me see a double standard here when it comes to Christian things?

Example: Madonna mocking a sacred Christian symbol in her show by being on a disco-cross with a crown of thorns during her R-rated show...(Not to mention NBC agreeing to air it)...If someone acted out a sacred Muslim tradition, they would be practically burned at the stake in the media!!

And Christians are always portrayed on TV and in movies to be right-wing fanatic nut jobs (I agree that some are, just like there are nut jobs in EVERY cultural/social group) but there are lots who aren't. Why is this behavior accepted, ner I say even encouraged!!

If someone acted out a sacred Muslim tradition, they would be practically burned at the stake in the media! - Not the western media, Salman Rushdie and the Danish cartoonists were defended. There would be protests, sure, and the protesters would be considered unreasonable fanatic Muslims. If Christians protested more, they would fall more into the right-wing fanatic nut job stereotype. I don't think Madonna hates Christians, if she uses Christan symbolism in her act. It might be offensive to some people.

I agree to some extent. I'm a pagan and nothing drives me crazier than people generalizing all Christians as out to get us. Then they call them stupid, illiterate, and the list goes on. The problem lies that most religions feel that they have the only right answer to the big questions in life. They then feel the need to tell others that if they believe otherwise they are wrong. What people think and believe is no one Else's business. We should all rejoice when someone has guidelines to live there life by. After all most of the time they are very similar no matter which religion.

I agree with you 100%. Also, a few years ago there was a singer who burned the Pope's picture on Saturday Night Live. I believe it was Shenaid O'Connor. I know I just crucified (no pun intended) her name, but I was too lazy to Google it for the right spelling. Also, at Christmas time some people complain if someone puts a nativity scene on public property. I'd like to see EVERY religion allowed to put up a display on public property for any of their holidays. It's freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion.

I really hope a Jewish or Muslim group tries to put a seasonal display up for one of their holidays. Not only wouldn't it bother me it would pave the way for Christians to be allowed to do so again. After all, no PC person would dare to object to a display by a Muslim or Jewish group. And so this would pave the way for ALL religions, Christians included to be allowed to display their religion again.

I see it too, and I am an Atheist.

I have debated numerous Christians in all manner of formats. I stick to the words right in the Bible and I draw the line at hanging around by nails on Easter. I just try to have a fair fight.

I doubt you need the information, your question indicates that you may already be well informed but may I suggest the book, "Bias" by Bernard Goldberg. It may increase your awareness, I know it did mine.

BTW, the author is a self professed Democrat and even he can see it from the inside... It's a good read but take your blood pressure medicine before you start...

You bring up a lot of worthy/thought provoking points!

There deffinately seems to be a double standard. I think what happened is that the word "christian" has become too general. For example, we call America a christian nation and many people who dont practice their relationship with God call themselves christians. Therefore, I think this has caused a decrease in respect...

There are ALOT of real good christian folks out there - and so, they need to make the call of whether they want to step up and stand up for christianity or whether they will turn the other cheek.

I guess its up to each individual.

But I deffinately agree with you - its not fair. No other religion would put up with this stuff as much as christians have! I think its time for us to step up and defend ourselves!!

I think it's our continued attempts to show what a free country we are. (WE ARE!) And this is the free speech part. But, also, we are friendly and diplomatic. Don't wish to offend other countries. (Unless we are there - at war with them) We would never, playfully or otherwise, use one of their religions in a mocking (blasphemous I think) way.
We invite people of title and/or authority here for meetings with our President and they make outrageous statements at their press conferences and we barely react. We kind of overlook it, rather like it was a faux pas, thankfully.

The mainstream has a guilty conscience from constant accusations of racism or other forms of hate. There's also not the same unified LOUD christian voice that we hear from other religions. (i.e. Islam, Judaism)

well there is one but have you to agree none of the other major religions bother people at home on the street or send out mailers to go to their "churches" and i do see a lot of mockery(mostly by themselves) of Jews and plus Madonna is getting a lot flack from everyone which is kind of funny because it just gives her free PR which is what she wants

I suspect that part of the reason is because Madonna is a Christian

It isn't Christians we hate. It's the fact that some people are using "Christianity" as an excuse and a crutch to hate people of all races, attack people who don't agree with them, and kill others in the name of God.
