The concept of being an American originated well before adoption of the US Constitution - probably about the times the British won the French and Indian War with substantial success from the colonists.

The residents of the 13 colonies were different - more reliant, more stubborn, more successful on an individual basis that was usual in Great Britain. The British noticed this and started referring to the residents of the 13 colonies and to the residents of the colonies in what today is Canada as Americans.
