san francisco has more of an urban, metropolitan feel. it has a public transportation system (the train - bart, the trolleys, etc) and it has more history behind it (the gold rush in the 1840s)
los angeles is more glamorous, more laid-back and coastal-feeling. it is more dazzling, more sparkly, and more tourist-attractive (hollywood, rodeo drive, etc)
i prefer san fran because i have moved recently from new york to a town near san diego, and i DIRELY miss my big, messy cities!! i NEED rain (of which there is never any in l.a.) and i like to be able to survive without a car quite comfortably. also, i find the people to be bubbleheads down here (with exceptions, of course) and i don't exactly get along with many people since i am so fast-paced and impatient. san francisco is more nautical and it comes alive at night. not to mention there are more cities right across the bay like oakland and berkeley, which is quite convenient. i like my grey skies and gloomy winters, but hey, everyone's different...

there are some nice places near LA, but LA itself sucks.

It has to be Los Angeles! you die and nobody knows about it. Whereas in Frisco people snob you and everybody walks like a zombie. Frisco is the bizarro world. Come to L.A. and you won't leave it.

neither one. Atlanta is the best. but if i had to choose, i would say San Fran. the people there from what i know seem more realistic and down to earth than people from los angeles.
